This design is bringing one into another, creating new space, harmony.
Concept: for example one hand is representation of Wincheap, lets say Industry and another hand is representation of Farmers Market, Nature. One hand is giving apple another hand is taking it. In Market food is exchanged for money, Nature is exchanged for Industry. These two hands fuse, creating new space inside. Bringing Nature into Industry, and opposite.
Farmers Market is a place where food is coming directly from the farms. That market is situated in the industrial area on a board of two different worlds, one is industrial world in front of the structure and another is nature world, behind the structure. To represent these two worlds with design, old building is stripped, leaving only old structure which represents the world of Industry and representation of Nature world is interior. Interior is extension of landscape.
Ground floor is increased in length for 3 meters to connect the building with landscape behind it and there is big window connecting it directly to the nature. On the First floor there is small open market on the back side of the building and small garden with plants in the middle of the structure and the bridge is connected to it from the side. There is a big window on the first floor connecting to the Industry world. Small garden in the middle of the structure is a heart of it; it is giving experience of growing, direct connection to the farms. Here every person is aloud to plant their own seed and become a farmer. Everything inside the building is part of interior (landscape), walls are used as shelves*(integrated into walls)...
Ground floor is mainly used to sell: fish, meat and food produced by the animals. First floor is used to sell vegetables and fruits.
As existing building was 10x10m and only one floor, it was not enough space for the Farmers Market. To make that design work, the height of the structure should be increased and the first floor should be on the same level as the landscape behind it, because interior is extension of that landscape. This became possible with digging out the ground for 2,5m underfeed the old building. This way the structure is the same height as it was before, and the concept is working even better because the ground is nature, so now it is not only staying on it but it is inside it and becoming part of it.
Cool composition and visual information. The conceptual element is very deep.
I hope you don't mind, I featured it in my journal. Hope you like the set-up... I am trying to give it a creative twist and build connections between DA'ers. [link]
Across the globe, 27 million men, women, and children live in some form of slavery. That is more people at this moment than in all the centuries of the Atlantic Slave Trade. Something must be done. This contest serves two purposes: Raising awareness about human trafficking and raising funds for the Not For Sale organization.
Open to all mediums. Deadline is March 10, 2010 @ 11:59pm PST.
